«Oyfn veg» – means «on the road» in Yiddish. One of Isaac Manger's most popular songs, «Oyfn veg shteyt a boym», begins with these words. This is where the name of the duo comes from.
Igor Beliy is known in Russia, USA and Germany as a Russian singer and songwriter, and Yevgeniya Slavina is a singer who has performed songs in Yiddish in Moscow and in Ukraine for more than 15 years. They were brought together by their shared love for Jewish musical and poetical tradition, and it led them to form a duo which they called «Oyfn veg». As a duo, they created a musical song programme sung in three languages, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Russian.
The programme includes Jewish folk songs, original songs by the two performers, and covers of songs by Nechama Hendel and Chava Alberstein. Although Igor and Yevgeniya have performed together for less than a year, the duo's style is already very recognizible, lyrical, sparklingly humorous, and soulful.
The programme, which encompasses different genres and interpretations, is designed to appeal to a wide audience, including both adults and children. It demonstrates yet another path for Jewish song, leading from a crossroads of folk music, Jewish theater, and original songwriting.
